Subway Calls Police Over $4 "Theft"

This is disgusting. Subway has not only fired one of it's Dunedin workers, but has brought charges of theft against the worker.

The worker, Jackie Lang, poured two cups of diet Coke during a break to comfort a distressed friend. This was against company policy - costing Subway a grand total of $4. Sure, rules are there for a reason, but I'm sure most employers would have warned the employee, perhaps docked the $4 from her paycheque.

Lang, who has a clean employment and criminal record, has been dismissed by the management of George St Subway and the police have been involved.

Could this be the definition of heavy handed?

I spent my 7th form, and first two years of university working in hospitality – cafes, restaurants, and pubs. Most of the places that I’ve worked for have had a staff drinks policy (free drinks while on shift, subsidised drinks off shift), and have been reasonably loose in enforcing it. I think this had a flow-on effect of building a good work place, and making employee’s part of the team. Obviously something Subway aren’t particularly interested in.
